Sleep disturbances place an uncalculated, but enormous, burden on the American society. School and job performance, even social relationships, can be affected. However, most sleep disorders, whether caused by physical or mental factors, can be treated or managed effectively once they are properly diagnosed.

What You Should Know About Sleep Disorders

An estimated 20 million Americans suffer from a sleep disorder known as Sleep Apnea. Sleep Apnea is a condition in which a person stops breathing repeatedly during sleep. The result is that the body does not get enough oxygen.

The most common signs are:

  • Loud & intermittent snoring
  • Choking sensation
  • Early morning headaches
  • Extreme daytime sleepiness

Sleep Apnea can cause the following:

  • Increased risk of heart problems
  • Increased risk of stroke
  • Increased risk of high blood pressure
  • Motor vehicle accidents or accidents at work

Treatment Benefits

  • Less daytime drowsiness and fatigue
  • Improved memory and concentration
  • Better work performance
  • Improved mood
  • Less health risks
  • Less risk of motor vehicle and work-related accidents

Sleep Lab - Evaluating Your Sleep:

Ransom Memorial Hospital offers a multi-channel Sleep Laboratory under the supervision of Dr. Takeshi Seto, Pulmonologist and Internal Medicine Specialist. Patients are typically seen as outpatients and have their sleep patterns recorded in the laboratory for one night to determine the cause of the sleep disturbance. Data collected during the night is then evaluated and a diagnosis can be made.
